People always ask me, “Hey Ila, (pronounced e-la), where should I go tonight?”, “Can I use pre-peeled garlic?”, and “What’s the quickest dinner ever?” I love talking with people about kitchen conundrums, testing recipes, and I LOVE eating out at places that are worth the calories.
Being half-Swiss and half Puerto-Rican (third generation Nuyorican to be precise), has heavily influenced my love for food and the types of foods I enjoy. I lean toward whole foods and a natural approach to eating because of my uncle Hansi and have an insatiable desire to perfect arroz con gandules because of my Titi (although it will never be as amazing as hers). It’s a balancing act that I work to perfect: veggie-forward, full of flava, and sometimes overly decadent.
I feel it’s my duty (as many New Yorkers do) to know my city, specifically the amazing foodways, and to pass on great recipes and tips for some great eats. So…I made it my job. I produced stories at a local news station for 10 years and after receiving a culinary degree from the ICC and a Masters in Food Studies from NYU, I combined my loves in 2014 to create a show called ¡Vamos!, which showcased the burgeoning Latin food scene in NYC. After over 50 episodes, I realized I needed a place to log all of my favorite spots and tried-and-true recipes that wasn’t an Excel spreadsheet.
This blog is just that, it’s my reference guide and go-to list of recipes, usually with a Latin flair. Welcome to my epic food adventures in NYC!
P.S. Never EVER use pre-peeled garlic!
